WE HAVE TO GET THE BASICS RIGHT!

1. APPLYING FOR JOBS YOU ARE NOT REMOTELY QUALIFIED FOR: Using the “spray and pray” tactic. Not bothering to read the role requirements may seem fruitful to you, however, it is not.
Why it matters: It demonstrates to the hiring manager the following: Does not pay attention to detail. Cannot understand simple instruction. Disrespect for your and other’s time. You do not know your worth.
Result: Negative impression; wasted effort and lower response rates.
2. NOT FOLLOWING APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Time and time again, I see instructions are ignored and candidates commenting on the advertised vacancies e.g. “Call me” / WhatsApp me on 256544778 etc. Submitting CV’s without a subject line specifying which position you are applying for. Submitting your details on a blank email. No introduction, blank subject line. Forgetting required attachments.
Why it matters: Attention to detail is a key indicator of work habits as is first impressions.
Result: Your application may be seen as spam and overlooked. The Hiring manager will automatically review applications that are highlighted directly to the open vacancy before reviewing those that are not.
3. NEGLECTING INFORMATION AND KEYWORDS: Information such as: Contact details; Location (area/region is sufficient); Job titles; Valid dates of employment; 5-7 key relevant duties per employer; Education / Training; Reasons for leaving and keywords are essential to an application.
Why it matters: Recruiters look at each resumé for 60-90 seconds on average, initially, when receiving submissions. ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) scans for specific keywords that match the job description (skills, job titles, tools, certifications). If the relevant keywords / information aren’t present, your resumé may be filtered out—even if you’re qualified.
Result: Key information and keywords assist in enhancing your visibility, while fundamental information fosters trust. When combined, they boost your likelihood of surpassing software filters and leaving a positive impression on recruiters. Helps verify your identity and professional history. Basic info like your job titles, dates, and contact details helps the recruiter understand your background fast. Makes it easier for hiring managers to match you to their needs. Proves you have the necessary skills and experience.
TO NOTE: Getting the fundamentals correct is crucial, as it will provide the Hiring Manager with a clear insight into your identity, the value you bring, and your suitability for the position you have applied for.
